An Evening with Author Jean Bartlett

Pacifica Tribune writer's new book honors Bay Area residents who served In 2012, Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, California – where more than 370,000 have been laid to rest – commissioned longtime Pacifica Tribune writer Jean Bartlett to write a historic guide book in honor of their 125th anniversary. In Jean's newly released book, "Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma: Roll Call ~ Reveille," readers will meet numerous individuals, now at rest at Holy Cross, who served in wars dating back to the U.S.-Mexican War, including: A mayor of pre-statehood San Francisco who served in the U.S.-Mexican War; The son of a slave who was an officer in the US Revenue Marine during the Civil War; The Colonel of the Sixteenth Texas Infantry Regiment (Confederacy); A Union officer who became a pirate; A colonel in the Spanish-American War who rode with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders; A WWI chaplain for whom Archbishop Mitty High School is named; A WWI nurse from Australia who was posthumously awarded the Gallipoli Star; An Iowan who served in the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment during WWI, whose awards included the Croix de Guerre with Palm; A former San Francisco Sacred Heart High School basketball star who served as a mariner in the US Merchant Marine during WWII; A WWII US Navy radio operator for whom the City of San Bruno named a baseball field; A WWII US Navy WAVE who served at the Naval Air Base at Corpus Christi, Texas; A WWII electrician's mate who served on the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise. Pacifica's castle carries his brother's name; A Filipino guerrilla who helped save 512 POWS from the Cabanatuan Prison Camp during WWII. Jean Bartlett's "Roll Call ~ Reveille," offers 55 deeply researched biographical tales which frequently travel familiar streets and places of the Bay Area.
