SUMMARY:Music at Mildred Owens
DESCRIPTION:Music at Mildred Owens\n\n\n\nPacifica Performances presents: \n\nRoger Glenn Jazz Organ Trio \n\nwith special guest vocalist\, Leah Tysse \n\n\n\nFormed in the tradition of the great jazz organ trios such as Stanley Turrentine & Shirley Scott\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, and Jimmy Smith\; performing jazz standards that lend themselves to the organ trio groove. This dynamic trio bring an eclectic sound of music where they play not only standard jazz\, but also encompass music of Brazil to popular music and summon the genius of some of the greats they have worked with in the past\, with surprises around every measure. \n\n\n\nRoger Glenn\, master multi-instrumentalist\, composer and entertainer on the flute\, sax\, clarinet and vibraphone\, is the son of the late Tyree Glenn\, one of 57 notable jazz musicians pictured in the historic photo "A Great Day in Harlem\," and who worked with jazz icons including Duke Ellington\, Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong. \n\n\n\nRoger entered the jazz scene at an early age and has worked and recorded with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie\, Mongo Santamaria\, Rosemary Clooney\, Herbie Mann and Pete Escovedo. His flute playing is featured on the Grammy-award winning album "La Onda Va Bien" with Cal Tjader\, as well as many notable recordings by Donald Byrd\, Peaches and Herb\, ConFunkShun\, and Bobby Hutcherson. In addition to leading his own groups\, most recently\, he has been touring with Taj Mahal\, Kurt Elling\, and The Count Basie Orchestra. \n\n\n\nHis greatest passion is Latin Jazz\, but his musical horizons extend broadly into jazz\, blues\, classical\, and popular styles. THE ROGER GLENN JAZZ ORGAN TRIO perform music from some of the classic jazz organ trios\, hot R&B\, and soul-stirring\, funky blues . \n\n\n\nGuest vocalist\, Leah Tysse has been a full-time singer/songwriter/musician in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2006. She has gained a reputation as a moving performer and respected band-leader with music ranging from horn-infused funk to tug-at-your-heartstrings acoustic ballads. \n\n\n\n For more than a decade Leah has been a featured soloist of the 100-person choir at Glide Memorial in San Francisco\, a community-service-driven church led by Civil Rights leader Cecil Williams. Leah has been fortunate to share the stage and record with some stellar artists such as: Sheila E.\, Pete Escovedo\, Stevie Wonder\, Michael Franti (of Spearhead)\, Levi Seasar (of Prince)\, Martin Luther (of The Roots)\, Ashford & Simpson\, and Taj Mahal. \n\n\n\nBrian Ho began playing piano at the early age of five\, taking lessons at both Stanford and San Jose State. By the age of sixteen\, he began to play professionally and started teaching. With his vast knowledge of styles and influences that includes New Orleans\, Gospel\, Blues\, Latin Jazz\, R&B\, and even Hip Hop\; he has developed a unique and modern take on standards and originals that bounce with energy. \n\n\n\nIn 2009\, he became an endorser for the legendary Hammond Organ. Ho solos and comps with his right hand while his left hand and feet play organ bass in the same tradition as his organ idols\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Shirley Scott\, and of course\, Jimmy Smith. \n\n\n\nBrian is fortunate to play with some of the finest musicians including Richie Cole\, Calvin Keys\, Akira Tana\, Josh Jones\, Christian Tamburr\, Peppe Merolla\, Terrence Brewer\, Clifford Brown III\, Rick Vandavier\, Wally Schnalle\, Oscar Pangilinan\, Nicholas Bearde. \n\n\n\nDrummer Lorca Hart grew up in Taos\, New Mexico in a musical family. He was exposed to a variety of instruments and musical styles as a child but early on it became clear that the drumset and Jazz were his passions. He attended California Institute of the Arts from 1992-96\, studying with Albert "Tootie" Heath\, Joe La Barbera\, Charlie Haden\, Wadada Leo Smith. \n\n\n\nSince that time Lorca has performed and recorded with many fine artists including: Ralph Moore\, Carmen Lundy\, Freddie Hubbard\, Calvin Keys\, Stanley Jordan\, Craig Handy\, Kyle Eastwood\, Herman Riley\, Azar Lawrence\, Red Holloway\, Plas Johnson\, John Heard\, Hugh Masekela\, the Clayton Brothers\, and Julian Lage. \n\n\n\nLorca teaches drumset at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut\, California\, as well as teaching ensemble classes at both the Healdsburg High School and Junior High School in Sonoma County\, CA.
